Band 8: The diagram below shows the changes which took place in a coastal area called Portland from 1950 to 2007. (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample)

The two maps show the changes in the area of Pentland between 1950 and 2007.

Overall, Pentland changed a lot during the period. It developed from a quiet area with few buildings into a modern town with more houses, shops and leisure facilities.

Looking first at the sea area, the biggest change was the construction of a marina. In 1950, there was only open water along the coast. By 2007, several piers had been built, creating a marina where boats could be kept. This made the sea area more suitable for water activities.

Turning to the land area, many changes took place between 1950 and 2007. The industrial area was removed and replaced by a park. A new road was extended past the park to connect it with the swimming pool and the multi-storey car park, which was built on part of the former grassland. The remaining grassland was completely replaced by shops and a cinema, and another wide road was built between these two buildings. In addition, the main road was widened, while the smaller side roads were removed. Furthermore, the former car park was replaced by apartment buildings, with more shops constructed below them. Finally, another road was added opposite the shops, and more houses were built in the south-east.
