The diagram demonstrates the life cycle of cicadas, showing how it circulates through different stages.
Overall, this is a continuous cycle, consisting of several stages. It illustrates the transformation from egg to fully developed insect, after which the process repeats itself.
Initially, the eggs are laid inside tree branches. After about 2-7 months, the eggs hatch into nymphs that fall to the ground. At this stage, the nymphs live underground and tunnel near tree roots. This is the longest phase of the cicada’s life, lasting from 2 years to 17 years.
Following this, the nymphs develop and they begin to emerge of the ground and crawl up trees. At this point, they undergo a moulting process, removing the old skin that takes between 20 and 150 minutes. Then, the cicada becomes an adult and mates to reproduce, which returns the process to its starting point, thereby completing the cycle.
