The diagram depicts the stages that each cicada need to undergo in its developmental cycle.
Overall, this is a natural, cyclical process with numerous stages involved, from cicada eggs to nymph and then mature forms.
Initially, cicada eggs are laid inside of tree branches. These eggs are left to thrive in two to seven months. This prolonged period is essential before cicada could enter its larval stage. In the next phase, cicada takes on a new form, known as nymph, and changes its shelters.
At this stage, cicada forms its habitat underground and lives in groups. Growing older, this species tunnel in places adjacent to tree roots. After 2-17 years, the process of moulting takes place as cicada replace its old skin by a new one. This period lasts for 20-150 minutes before cicada reaches its fully mature form.
