The diagram illustrates the step-by-step manufacturing process of sugar from sugar cane.
Overall, this is a linear process consisting of seven main stages, beginning with the growth of sugar cane and culminating with the drying and cooling process. The raw material is transformed into juice before being processed into sugar.
Initially, sugar cane is grown for a 12- to 18-month period in fields. It is then harvested either by a combine harvester or by hand using specialised tools before being sent to a crusher. After crushing the sugar cane into juice, this liquid is filtered through a limestone filter, allowing purified juice to be obtained.
Following this, the purified juice passes into an evaporator and is heated from below in order to eliminate moisture and produce a syrup. Once this stage is complete, it is spun in a centrifuge to separate sugar crystals from the syrup. Finally, the resulting material is dried and cooled in a container, allowing it to turn into sugar.
