The diagram illustrates the planned modifications for Foster Road between SE 84th and 85th Avenue, contrasting the existing layout with the proposed design.
Overall, the main changes involve a significant reduction in vehicle lanes to accommodate larger pedestrian spaces, and a considerable increase in green infrastructure and cycling facilities, ultimately aiming for a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
Currently, the road features two lanes in each direction for motor traffic with narrow sidewalks on both sides. The proposed design converts the four vehicle lanes into two much narrower traffic lanes – one in each direction. This substantial reduction in road space allows for the installation of significantly widened sidewalks, which will be tree-lined, as well as a new central median also featuring trees.
Furthermore, a key change is the introduction of dedicated bicycle lanes running parallel to the new, narrower vehicle lanes. Finally, a new pedestrian crossing is planned to ensure safe movement across the street, a feature not visible in the ‘Before’ scenario
