The process depicts various stages in the development of great species of salmons.
Overall, the life cycle of salmons involves three main stages beginning with salmon eggs and finishing with adult salmons for about ten years.
First, salmon usually spawn in the upper reaches of rivers where the water flows slowly. The eggs are surrounded by small stones and reeds for about five to six months before hatching. The newly hatched salmon are called ‘fry’ and they are very small in size, about three to eight centimeters. The ‘fry’ then follow the river lower river and stay there for 4 years until they reach a length of 12 to 15 centimeters. These large fish are called ‘smolt’.
At the next stage of the life cycle, the ‘smolt’ migrates to the open sea. After five years, these ‘smolt’ will grow to adult size, about seventy to senventy-six centimeters. Finally, the salmon swims back to where it was born, and the cycle begins again.
