Athletics participants commenced with half a million children, and kept on gaining in popularity to reach its peak at 5 million children in 2012, plunging slightly to 4.7 million children two years afterwards. Children swimmers witnessed a steady climb, which had approximately 2 million children to start with, and picking up more children to stop at 3.5 million. Over the same 6-year period, the number of Footballers fluctuated at around 8 million, far greater than the other two sports.
