The first table illustrates how the total numeber of citizens in New York City changed between 1800 and 2000. The last two tables provide data on the fluctuation in the population and the percentage of total population of Manhattan,Brooklyn,Bronx, Queens and Staten Island during the same 200-year period.
Overall, it is clear that the number of people choosing to settle in New York City constantly increased. In addition, while there was a significant rise in the population of five districts, the population of Manhattan showed a dramatic fall in the percentage of total population.
Looking at the first table, we can see that the number of resident in New York City drastically jumped from 79,216 in 1800 to 3,437,202 in 1900, after which the figure was twice larger than it previously was in 2000.
Moving on to the second table, the population of MAnhattan reached a peak of 1,850,093 in 1900, followed by a moderate fall to 1,538,096 in 2000. Compared to the fluctuating population, the percentage of total population in Manhattan experienced a sharp drop from 76% to 19% over the 200-year period.
When it comes to the other four districts(Brooklyn,Bronx, Queens, Staten Island), the two centuries witnessed a dramatic growth in the number of citizens. The figure rapidly surged from 18,701 in 1800 to 1,587,109 in 1900, and then ended with 6,471,089 in 2000. As for the percentage of total population, there was a continuous increase from 24% in 1800 to 81% in 2000.
