The data illustrates the changes in music consumption forms in the UK between 2013 and 2018.
Overall, listening to music by streaming and vinyl increased over the period, while CD’ and downloads decreased. Vinyl was the least popular at the start and remained so until the end of the period. At first most people consumed music by CD’s and then streaming became preferred.
In 2013 streaming was used by just over 10 million people and it grew dramatically up to 90 million by 2018. At the end of 2015, it outperformed downloads when around 30 million people streamed music. And at the start of 2016 outranked CD’s, when close to 50 million UK residents chose this way of listening to music.
At the beginning CD’s were the most popular, being used by around 60 million citizens and in the second place were downloads, preferred by twice as less people, approximately 30 million. Over the next five years they both declined gradually. However, they did not get lower than vinyl, which never reached 10 million listeners.
