The line charts depicts the proportions of three different age groups in Chinese population from 1960 till now and the predictions for the next three decades.
Overall, the previously dominant age group, being the youngest one, followed and is expected to follow a downward trend, whereas the middle age group has increased and is predicted to change direction.
The predominant age group (0-14), composing more than two fifth of the population, has witnessed a decline of around 20%, which is estimated to go down further until dipping at 17.5% in 2050.
The middle age group (15-64) was the second largest one with around 40% of population, and has almost doubled by now. However, this trend, according to the forecast, will change direction and end up at slightly above a half at the end of the given period. The percentile of those older than 65 started the period as the minimal proportion and, despite having increased, has still stayed there. Nevertheless, it is predicted that this figure will surpass that of the youngest age group in 2040 and peak at around 25%.
