Overall, both numbers of global 3D cinemas and 3D films experienced a remarkable increase towards the end of the surveyed period. Besides, although 3D live action films only commenced being shown on screens in 2008, the increasing rate of live action releases surpassed its animation counterpart.
Considering the first half of the surveyed period, in 2005, the number of global digital 3D screens established was close to zero. However, from 2006 onwards, the number of 3D cinemas being constructed started to increase gradually until reaching the ultimate figure of approximately 2000 thousand screens designated to 3D films. Despite the expansion in the cinematic facilities in the 3D film industry, the number of 3D cinematic products remained stationary at only 2 movies except for a subtle increase in the number of released 3D movies in 2008. During the period from 2005 to 2007, 3D films consisted mainly of animation products. The year 2008 marked the advent of 3D live action films being shown on screens.
As for the figure of global digital 3D screens, the year 2008 marked the surge in the number of global digital screens designated for 3D movies. From 2008 towards the end of the surveyed period, global 3D cinemas were constantly expanded and established to satisfy the increasing recreational demands for 3D films of audiences until the total number of global 3D screens reached the ultimate figure being merely 38,000 screens. The spike in the number of 3D cinemas established also culminated in the discernible increase in the creation of 3D cinematic products. In addition, 2008 also witnessed the advent of 3D live-action films. Although both live-action and animation films experienced the constantly stakingly high increase in numbers, the expanding speed of live-action films doubled the pace of their animation counterparts. In the last year of the surveyed duration, the number of live-action films released was two-fold greater than the figure of animation kinds, which contributing to the total number of 3D films being around 75 movies.
