The pie charts demonstrate how much water was used for different residential purposes in two separate years, 1988 and 2008.
Overall, it is clear that while the kitchen and bathroom became the main areas of water consumption by 2008, the percentage of water used for the garden, toilets, and laundry decreased. The most notable change was the significant increase in kitchen water use and the sharp decline in garden use.
In terms of increases, water used in the kitchen doubled over the twenty-year period, rising from 15% in 1988 to 30% in 2008. Similarly, bathroom usage grew from a quarter (25%) to 29%, making these two categories the highest users of water at the end of the period.
On the other hand, water consumption in other categories fell. The most dramatic drop was seen in the garden sector, which fell from 20% to just 8%. Usage for washing clothes also saw a slight decrease, moving from 22% to 19%. Finally, the proportion of water used for toilets declined by 4%, finishing at 14% in 2008.
