The graph below illustrates the usage of water globally in agriculture, industry, and domestic sector in one century from 1900 until 2000 and the table depicts the consumption of water in two different country in 2000.
Overall, the highest amount of water consumption belongs to agriculture, while domestic sector uses the lowest amount. Also, Brazil has the largest usage of water per person.
The consumption of water have upward trend during these years. Agriculture use 500 km³ of water in the first year of this period, but it increased significantly to 3000 km³ in 2000. Whereas, the water consumption in industry and domestic chores was zero in 1900 and this amount has slight increase, only one or two km³. Then, from the year 1950, this rate increased moderately to 1000 km³ in industry and 500 km³ in domestic at the end of this timeframe.
According to the table, water consumption in countries depends on their population and irrigated lands. Brazil use 350 m³ of water per person with a population of 176 million, while Congo with 5.2 million people in their society and 100 km² irrigated land, use 8m³ water.
