The line chart compares the proportion of Australian residents whose birthplace were Asia, UK and other areas, from 1976 to 2011. Overall, more people who did not originate in Australia immigrated to this country over a 35-years period. Additionally, the percentage of UK demographics residing in Australia witnessed a downward trend, while the figure for Asia and other countries followed a reverse trend.
In 1976, the UK headed the list of immigrants to Australia, accounting for 14%, whereas the lowest percentage was belong to that of Asia. Over the next 35 years, fewer people from UK chose to live in Australia as the proportion plunged to only 5%, becoming the region that have the lowest of Australian immigrants . In contrast, Asian countries experienced a gradual boost in their demographics to reach the peak of 15% in the end of the period, overtaking that of UK and having the highest number of immigrant to Australia compared to the remain areas.
Starting at 12% initially, the figure for other regions seemed to followed inconsistent trend, with a drop of 5% in 1986. This number then soared and reach the highest point at nearly 14% in 2006 before decreasing of 2% in 2011. The proportion of Australian immigrants predicted an overall rise from 23% to 25%, including a trough of 21% in 2001.
