The following graph illustrates the proportion of the population in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia living in cities over the period of 1970 to 2020, with predictions for 2030 and 2040.
Overall, all countries have displayed an upward trend over the past five decades.
In 1970, Malaysia and the Philippines started with a close number, about 30% and 31%, respectively. Subsequently, both of them were increasing until 1991, when the Philippines suddenly decreased to around 40% in 2010, before continuously rising to around 50% by the end of the period. On the contrary, Malaysia steadily climbed, reaching the highest prediction among the countries at 80% in 2040.
Regarding Thailand and Indonesia, which started with lower percentages, less than 20% and 15%, respectively, both countries experienced a similar increasing trend, reaching the exact same number of about 28% in 2000, with a prediction to continue gaining the total number of citizens in 2040.
In conclusion, the percentages of people in all four countries are expected to go up from 2030 to 2040.
