The graph given shows the breakdown of bananas’ cost in four countries spanning from 1984 to 2004. Overall, while the price of bananas in Japan and the USA experienced an upward trend, the others saw a different pattern. Japan had the highest price throughout the period, while the USA accounted for the lowest.
The banana prices in Japan and the USA both rose, but to varying extents. Starting at under 2.00 dollars, Japan’s data reached its peak of nearly 3.00 dollars per kilogram in 1995. However, this figure depicted the dramatic decline in the following year and then bottomed out at just over 1.50 US dollars in 2001. From that point onwards, the price marginally recovered. When it comes to the USA, the price of bananas surged from approximately 0.75 US dollars to closely 1.30 dollars per kilogram in 1996, the trend was halted in 1998, and the figure for the USA remained unchanged for the rest of the period.
Conversely, the bananas’ cost in France and Germany both indicated the downward trend. The figure for France was static in the first period from 1994 to 1997, before taking the first plunge in 1998. This data suffered the biggest collapse in 2003 and then staged a recovery in 2004. With regard to Germany, its movements were erratic til 2002, then substantially changed to a steady pattern.
