Overall, the average years of schooling increased steadely in all regions over the given period. Russia and Serbia display a sharp increase among other countries, while India has the lowest levels during the time period, despite showing a significant growth.

In the year 1940 the global average stood at approximately 2 years, rising gradually to about 8 years in 2020. Russia showed a sharp increase from the year 1960 with around 4.5 years, while the numbers kept growing to the year 2000. A simillar trend can be observed in Serbia, where the numbers kept rising steadely from around 4 to approximately 12 years.

By contrast, China and India started at much lower levels, but kept rising gradually. For example, Chinas figure increased from around 1.8 years in 1940 to roughly 9 years in 2020, while India started from 1 year in 1940 and kept increasing rapidly reaching about 7 years in 2020.
