The graphs below illustrate the percentages of car ownership by UK families over three decades.
In the first decade, most families owned no car, by almost 40% of population, in the following decade (1981) the number of households without a car decreased to 32% and this trend continued until third decade and in year 2001 only 20% of families had no car.
The percentage of families that owned only one car, fluctuated over the years. The starting point in year 1971 was almost 22% and slightly rose up to 27% in 1981. This trend dropped back to 18% in 1991 but the gradually increased to approximately 20% by 2001.
On the other hand, the trend for households that owned two or more cars over thirty years, starts at almost 30% in 1971 which is the highest point of this trend. This trend halved in the next ten years and became only 15% in year 1981. Then gradually increased to 20% in 1991 and almost remained same until 2001.
Overall, the percentages of car owner ship among UK households changed significantly over the years, with the lowest percentage of families owning no car by the end.
