The line graph illustrates the expenditure of the average household, by percentage over a 50-year period starting from 1965.
Overall, it is clear that except for the savings, all other categories witnessed upward trends. Additionally, it is also evident that the percentage spent on accommodation was highest from 1990 to 2015.
Firstly, accommodations decreased slightly during the period between 1965 and 1990, which was followed by a significant increase to 17%, which was the highest point within the 25 years from 1990 to 2015. In comparison, the figure for savings experienced a gradual drop from 1965 to 1990 and became equal to that of accommodation at above 10% in 1990. 25 years later, the proportion of savings went down considerably to 4%.
Furthermore, there was steady growth from 3% to approximately 6% in the dates of energy and transport during the 50-year period starting from 1965. Comparatively, improving the housing received the lowest allocation, remaining at 3% at the same time. The percentages of food and recreation had a similar trend with that of home improvement, both rose steadily to more than 5%.
