The bar chart compares four methods of waste treatment in four countries: the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and the UK.
Overall, the Netherlands relied mainly on recycling, whereas the other three countries made the greatest use of landfill. In addition, chemical treatment accounted for the smallest proportion in all countries.
Recycling was by far the most common method in the Netherlands, where around 68% of waste was processed in this way. In contrast, the figures for Italy, Spain and the UK were much lower, at about 20%, 11% and 12% respectively. When it comes to landfill, the UK recorded the highest proportion, at approximately 65%. Italy and Spain also made considerable use of this method, both at around 40%, while the Netherlands showed the lowest percentage at only 8%.
Regarding burning, Spain used this approach the most (about 30%), followed by Italy (22%), the Netherlands (10%) and the UK (5%). Chemical treatment was the least favoured option in all four countries, with all figures standing at roughly 7%.
