Subsequently, this figure started to decrease and hit a low of about 30 million tonnes in 2004, before growing gradually to roughly 43 million tonnes in 2008. Moreover, rail recorded the lowest figures of around 5 million tonnes in the initial year, after which it experienced a steady and consistent rise to approximately 25 million tonnes in the final year.
In terms of the remaining transports, water transport was just under 40 million tonnes at the beginning, and this figure surpassed the rail at around 1984. After that, it went up slightly to 56 million tonnes in 1988 and levelled of by 2000, prior to rising by 15 million tonnes in 2008. Finally, road transportation stood at around 20 million tonnes in 1980 and experienced a sharp rise to 90 million tonnes by 2008, despite some fluctuations.
