Overall, investment in clean energy increased over the period, reaching its peak in the final year. Wind energy attracted the largest share of funding throughout, whereas energy-smart technologies consistently received the lowest level of investment.
In 2008, total investment in clean energy stood at approximately £2.5 billion, with wind energy accounting for about half of this figure, at around £1.25 billion. In the following year, spending on wind energy rose sharply to roughly £6.25 billion, representing over 90% of total clean energy investment.
After this significant rise, overall investment showed some fluctuations in the subsequent years; however, wind energy remained the dominant sector. Although funding for solar energy and other sources increased gradually, their figures were considerably lower in comparison. By 2015, total investment in clean energy reached its highest point, largely driven by continued strong investment in wind power, while energy-smart technologies remained the least funded sector.
