The line graph illustrates how the average household budget was allocated among four different categories from 1995 to 2020.
Overall, housing accounted for an increasingly large share of household spending and became the dominant category by the end of the period. Similarly, the proportions spent on entertainment rose steadily, while the average budget for food and transport declined gradually throughout the period.
By 1995, housing made up 25% of the household expenditure, after which the figure increased steadily to around 42% in 2020. Notably, it overtook food by 2000 and remained the largest spending category thereafter. Likewise, the average proportion allocated to entertainment experienced a consistent upward trend, rising from roughly 8% in 1995 to nearly 20% by 2020. In the final year, it surpassed food and transport and made it the second-ranked category.
By contrast, spending on food showed a continuous decline, although it initially represented the largest spending category, falling from 30% in 1995 to about 17% by 2020. Similarly, the percentage of household budget devoted to transport decreased gradually from 15% to approximately 12%, despite a slight increase to nearly 16% in 2000.
