The graph illustrates how many elephants lived in Asia from 1997 to 2004.
Overall, the number of elephants in India was the highest, while the opposite was true for that in China. Additionally, it was notable that the figures of elephants in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos remained virtually unchanged throughout the period.
In 1997, there were 10,000 elephants in India, compared to about 5,600 and 4,000 for Myanmar and Thailand, respectively. Over the next seven years, the figures in India and Thailand witnessed a substantial downward trend to 7,800 and 1,100 while that in Myanmar fell slightly to 5,300.
Regarding Malaysia and Sri Lanka, both figures of elephants were similar, with 3,000, followed by 1,000 for that in China. In 2004, the number of elephants in Malaysia dropped considerably to 1,000, twice as much as for elephants in China, while Sri Lanka decreased marginally to 2,900. In contrast, the figures of elephants in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos showed no significant change with 1,000.
