Overall, Canada exported more wheat than Australia and the European Community for most of the period shown. However, while Canada’s wheat exports fluctuated and Australia’s fell, the figure for the European Community witnessed a steady increase over time.
As the graph shows, Australia exported 15 million tons of wheat at the beginning of the period, which increased slightly to around 16 million tons in 1986. Then, wheat exports experienced a gradual decrease until it levelled off at approximately 11 million tons in the end of the six-year period. Regarding Canada’s exports, in 1985 it shipped nearly 19 million tons of wheat, this number dropped by roughly 2 million. The figure then, rose significantly and reached a peak of 25 million tons in 1988. Afterward, the foreign trade of wheat plunged to below 15 million in 1989 before climbing up to under 20 million in 1990.
By contrast, wheat exports by the European community started at almost 17 million tons in 1985 and fell by nearly 2 million tons in 1987. Then, the figure remained unchanged before increasing to approximately 21 million in the final year.
