The line graph illustrates the number of international students from Japan, China, India, and Korea who studied in Australia over a 20-year period from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, it is clear that the number of students from all four countries increased, with China experiencing the most significant growth. Although Korea had the highest number of students at the start, it was eventually overtaken by China and India.
In 2000, Korea had the largest number of students, with around 20,000, followed by Japan at 15,000. China and India had lower figures, at approximately 10,000 and 8,000 respectively. Over the next decade, student numbers from China rose steadily, surpassing Korea in 2008 and reaching about 50,000 by 2020. Similarly, India saw rapid growth, overtaking both Japan and Korea by 2015.
Meanwhile, Japan’s numbers increased slightly until 2010, peaking at around 20,000, before declining back to their initial level by 2020. In contrast, Korea’s figures grew moderately until 2010 but then plateaued and eventually dipped to about 25,000 in 2020. By the end of the period, China had the highest number of students, followed by India, Korea, and Japan.
