The bar chart illustrates the numbers of male and female undergraduates selecting six computer science disciplines at an American university in the year 2011.
Overall, male undergraduates were predominant in all courses, except for linguistics and natural sciences. Furthermore, the most substantial difference was recorded in the number of male and female learners enrolling in mathematics.
As for male-dominated subjects, at 200 students, the number of male mathematics students was about seven times as many as that of their female counterparts. Moreover, the gender gap in psychology was smaller than in mathematics, with 200 females and 175 males, respectively. The figures for undergraduates who studied engineering and programming were relatively similar, with 150 male undergraduates, twice as many as female enrollment.
In contrast, the number of females pursuing linguistics stood at 125, in comparison with only 60 of male undergraduates. Finally, natural sciences was the most chosen area of qualifications and similar among both sexes, with 200 students.
