The line graph illustrates the percentage of female members of parliament in five European countries between 2000 and 2012, every 4 years.
Overall, the proportion went up in all countries except Spain. Belgium had the most significant growth and became the highest in the end, while Italy started from the lowest point but increased the fastest.
In 2000, Germany was the highest with about 31%, followed by Spain and Belgium with 27% and 23%. The UK and Italy was much lower, at around 17% and 3%. During the next 12 years, Germany increased slowly and reached about 33%. Spain increased sharply to 36% in 2004 and become the leader, but then it decreased a little and stayed at 35% in 2012. Belgium also grew a lot and overtook Spain after 2008, and peaked at about 38%.
On the other hand, Italy started very low but grew substantial, and overtaken the UK by 2008. After that it remained stable at 23%. The UK only had a slight increase and also reached about 23% at the end of the period. By 2012, Belgium was the most dominant country with 38%, while Italy and the UK was the lowest with around 23%.
