The line graph illustrates the changes about the amount of goods transported in the UK over the period of 1974 and 2002 by four different types of vehicle. Overall, all four kinds of transportations experienced growth in million tones over the period. Among them, the mode of road transport was the most popular.
In 1974, around 70 million tonnes of goods transported by road, and this number steadily increased to approximately 100 million tonnes by 2002. Water transport, on the other hand, started at roughly 40 million tonnes and experienced fluctuations, but overall rose to around 65 million tonnes at the end of the period.
Goods transported by rail were 40 million tonnes in 1974 and remained fairly stable until the middle of the 1990. After that, there was a gradual increase, reaching around 41 million tonnes in 2002. In addition, pipeline transport began at 5 million tonnes in 1974 and rose steadily peaking at just over 20 million tonnes by 2002.
