The line graph illustrates the information about the amount of goods traded in the UK over the period from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Overall, it is clear that road transport was the highest, while pipeline transport was the lowest. It is noticeable that rail transport showed a decreasing trend. Moreover, there were significant differences between water and rail transport.
Looking at the details, pipeline started at around 6 million tonnes in 1974 and then increased to approximately 22 million tonnes in 2002. In addition, rail services stood at 40 million tonnes in the beginning, showed a gradual decrease, and at last it stabilized. In contrast, shipping experienced a fluctuation around 63 million tonnes.
Furthermore, road transport reached a peak of a little less than 100 million tonnes, whereas railway carriage dropped to almost 30 million tonnes in 1986. Similarly, water transportation was higher than rail freight throughout the period. Overall, water haulage had the greatest figures compared to pipeline transport.
