The line graph illustrates the number of products which were carried in the UK using road, water, rail, and pipeline from 1974 and 2002. Units are measured in million tonnes.
Overall, all figures of transport increased over the span, except for rail, remaining steady. While the pipeline was the lowest one among them, the road was the most popular mode of transport.
The road witnessed an upward trend over the period, starting from almost 70 million tonnes in 1974. Then, it peaked just under 100 million tonnes until 2002. The line of water began with around 40 million tonnes in 1974 and continued increasing until it reached just above 60 million tonnes in 2002.
Turning to details, the rail mode started in 1974 with around 40 million tonnes and this figure was the similar with water at the beginning of the year. The rail had some fluctuations until 1998. Its rates was just below 40 million tonnes. After 1988, it went up slightly just above 40 million tonnes in 2002. There was a sharp rise in the line of the pipeline from approximately 5 million tonnes in 1974 to around 25 million tonnes in 1990. This figure decreased slightly by 20 million tonnes until 2002.
