The line graph illustrates the amount of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport: road, water, rails, and pipeline.
As can be inferred from the chart, the highest volume of goods was moved by road mode while pipeline recorded the smallest figure throughout the period. In addition, while an upward trend was seen in the data of road, water, and pipeline, the rail method showed a fluctuating tendency.
Initially, about 50 million tonnes of goods was transported by road in 1974. A steady change was recorded before sharply increased to nearly 95 million tonnes in 2002, registered the most popular mode of transport. Meanwhile, pipeline constituted the lowest share, with being respectively 5 million in 1974, and 20 million in 2002.
For the data of the two remaining methods, a level of approximately 40 million tonnes of goods was moved by both water and rail. By the end of the period, water accounted for 63 million tonnes, while rail remained the same level as the outset.
