The line chart illustrates the quantities of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four different modes of transport – road, water, rail and pipeline. Quantities are measured in million tonnes.
Overall, the three out of four transport modes experienced growth in the quantity of goods transported in the UK, while pipeline had the lowest amount.
Road transport was the dominant mode of transport, starting with 70 million tonnes in 1974. It stayed at around 80 million tonnes between 1990 and 1994, before increasing and reaching almost 100 million tonnes in 2002. Water transport started at around 40 million tonnes in 1974 and rose to 60 million tonnes in 1982. It then remained relatively stable until 1994, before increasing to just over 60 million tonnes.
By contrast, pipeline transport started at the lowest level and increased slightly to just over 20 million tonnes. Then, it remained stable almost for 8 years before a slight fall to 20 million tonnes in 1994, after which the figure levelled off for the remainder of the period. As for rail transport, it started over 40 million tonnes and had exhibited a downward trend until 1994, and finished at roughly the same figure in 2002.
