The line graph illustrates how the UK delivered various goods through four different modes of transport from 1974 to 2002. From an overall perspective, it is clear that delivery activities have increased over time, despite some fluctuations.
The road and pipeline transport modes have shown steady growth over the recorded eight years. In 1974, goods transported by road reached almost 70 million tonnes, marking a strong beginning. Although there were some ups and downs, this mode of transport peaked at approximately 100 million tonnes by the end of the period. Meanwhile, pipeline transportation gained prominence as well, starting with less than 5 million tonnes and ending with more than 20 million tonnes in 2002.
In contrast, goods transported by water and rail experienced significant fluctuations. Both modes began at a similar level, around 40 million tonnes. Water transport increased to nearly 60 million tonnes and remained stable for about 14 years, ultimately reaching approximately 65 million tonnes. On the other hand, rail transport saw a continuous decrease over five periods before recovering its demand in 2002.
