The bar chart illustrates the percentages of tourists from five different countries who used four types of transport while visiting New Zealand in 2004.
Overall, air and coach were the most commonly used means of transport among tourists, whereas ferries were the least popular in all five countries. In addition, transport preferences varied noticeably by nationality, especially in car usage.
British and German tourists showed similar patterns. In both groups, coach travel was the most popular option, accounting for approximately 58% of British visitors and 54% of Germans. Air travel ranked second for these two nationalities, at just over 40%. Cars were used by a smaller proportion, while ferries were chosen by only about 20% of tourists from both countries.
Japanese tourists mainly travelled by air, with just over half using this mode, followed closely by coaches at around 48%. Car and ferry use among this group was comparatively low. In contrast, Korean visitors preferred travelling by car, with nearly 48% choosing this option. Australian tourists, however, favoured coaches the most (50%), while air travel was the least popular among them, at roughly 25%.
