The line graph depicts the amount of emissions released into UK air contributed by three main causes from 1900 to 2005.
Overall, except for transport, all figures including the total pollution declined gradually during the research period. In addition, industry was the main source led to air pollution until 2002.
To begin with, industry started as the highest number in 1900 with merely under 6 million tonnes of air pollutants, however, it steadily fell to 2 million tonnes in 2005. Similar patterns could be seen in the data for total contaminants with around 8 million tonnes emitted in 1900 and the final figure of 5 million tonnes in 2005. Likewise, air pollutants from household activities remained unchanged until 1996 with 1 million tonnes was recorded prior to a plummet to nearly zero in the end of the survey.
In contrast, transport witnessed the opposite trend. Starting at the same 1 million tones as households, it grew remarkably to merely under 3 million tonnes in 2002; then exactly 3 million tones in 2005, making it the greatest contributor that year.
