Overall, it is immediately apparent that Japanese salaries increased substantially throughout the period, whereas the prices of both types of televisions declined. In addition, the price of black and white televisions fell much more dramatically than that of colour televisions.
Looking first at the average monthly salary and price of black and white televisions, it can be seen that these two categories followed opposite trends throughout the period. Initially, the average salary stood at 18 thousand yen, while the price of a black-and-white television was around 110 thousand yen. Over the following years, the former rose gradually before increasing sharply after the mid-1990s, whereas the latter declined grammatically throughout the period. By 2000, they had reached roughly 67 thousand yen and 21 thousand yen, respectively.
With regard to the price of colour televisions, a somewhat different pattern can be observed. Initially, it began with 100 thousand yen in the mid-1970s. Over the course of the period, the price fell steadily, dropping to around 67 thousand yen in the early 1980s before continuing to decline more gradually. By the end of the period, it had reached approximately 46 thousand yen.
