The image shows a line graph depicting the proportion of the population aged 65 and over for three different countries (USA, Sweden, Japan) from 1940 to 2040. In 1940, the percentage for the USA, Sweden, and Japan starts at approximately 7%, 8%, and 5% respectively. Over the years, the percentage in Sweden and the USA show a steady increase, reaching around 15% by 2000. The line for Japan remains relatively stable until the 1980s, after which it starts to increase sharply, surpassing the USA and Sweden around the year 2000 and reaching over 25% by 2040. The USA and Sweden lines follow a similar steady upward trend, with the USA reaching around 20% and Sweden close to 25% by 2040.

The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over during a century, in three different countries, from different continents (Japan, Sweden, USA).
During the first half, that is, the first 50 years, Sweden and USA have almost the same values. Suddenly, after the year 2000, the proportion in Sweden increased while USA’s values remained the same. Between 2000 and 2010 reached a peak of 20%, but after this the proportion decreased. In comparison, Japan has the most different values to these two countries.
As I can see, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in Japan until just before the year 2010 remained below the 5%. That can be explained probably because of the natural disasters that occurs frequently, such as tsunamis or earthquakes. However, the proportion of the population aged 65 and over in Japan in 2040 is expected to be higher than Sweden and USA, being more than 25%, while the other countries 25% or less.
