The given line graph delineates the number of goods which are transported by four different methods of vehicles in the UK between 1974 and 2002. Overall, the quantities of goods transported by road, water and pipeline showed an upward trend, while those transported by rail experienced a downward trend.
In 1974, the delivery of goods by road and water stood at nearly 70 and about 40 million tonnes respectively. The transportation by road fluctuated during the 16-year period, starting from 1978, and then exhibited a notable increase before reaching a peak at approximately 10 million tonnes in 2002. Simultaneously, the quantities of goods by water rose to around 60 million tonnes, then remained steady until 1990 and was at over 60 million tonnes after a slight decrease between 1994 and 1998. In the meanwhile, the figure for the quantities of goods transported by pipeline was at around 5 million tonnes, gradually increased later before reaching over 20 million tonnes in 1994 and leveling off until 2002.
On the other hand, the figure about the pipeline demonstrated a consistent decline. In 1974, it was higher than the goods delivered by water, which took up exactly 40 million tonnes. Nevertheless, it had a modest drop and varied from 1978 to 1994. After that, there was a marginal climb at over 40 million tonnes that had a quite common in the beginning of the period in 2002.
