The graphs illustrate cinema attendance rates and the average cinema visit frequencies among different age groups in Austria between 1996 and 2000.
Overall, the attendance rate increased despite minor fluctuations, whereas the average frequency of visits peaked in 1997 before falling and then remaining relatively stable. Moreover, distinct age groups followed a similar pattern, with the younger people visiting cinemas more frequently than older people.
In 1996, the cinema attendance was 62% before rising to 72% in 1997. This figure experienced a marginal fall in 1999, decreasing to 70%. However, the attendance rate returned to its peak value in 2000, reaching 72% again. In terms of frequency, the average number of visits in 1996 was 10.3. Then, the frequency rose in 1997, reaching a peak of 11.1 visits. Over the next three years, the figure decreased substantially, stabilising at around 8.3 visits.
Young people aged 14-24 and individuals aged 25-35 recorded the highest visit frequencies among all age groups. Starting at around 15 visits, both groups rose significantly to more than 20 in 1997, although the younger individuals remained slightly ahead throughout the period. They then fell back to their initial positions before ending the period at around 17 visits. In addition, the 35-49 group consistently remained above the 50+ category throughout the period. The 35-49 age group increased from about 13 visits in 1996 to around 18 in 1997, before falling to roughly 14 in 1998. It then rose again to approximately 20 visits in 1999 and ended the period at around 15. The 50+ group followed a similar trend but remained the least frequent cinema-goers throughout the period, fluctuating between about 10 and 17 visits.
