Overall, it is clear that the number of workers in the UK’s steel industry decreased throughout the years. Additionally, the amount of steel production in UK and its total demand significantly decreased, while steel imports rose over time.
Regarding job opportunities, the number of employers was the highest, at 50000 people. Between 1970 and 1990, this figure dramatically increased all 2 decades, at over 20000 people in 1990. Moreover, the employment numbers almost reduce, reaching just under 20000 people in 2000.
In terms of value in steel industry, the UK’s steel import figure started at over 20000 tons in 1970. After 30 decades, this figure slightly rose to 40000 tons and reached 100000 tons in 2000. Meanwhile, the total demand for steel industry in the UK was the highest in 1970, at over 200000 tons. Over the following three decades, the demand of steel industry decreased by approximetaly 50% and by 2000 this figure was 100000 tons. Likewise, the UK’s steel production followed a similar parttern , decreasing gradually over the first two decades before exprecienceing a period of stability in the last 10 years to end at 100000 tons.
