The line graph compares the proportion of the population using the Internet in the USA, Canada, and Mexico between 1999 and 2009.
Overall, Internet usage increased steadily in all three countries over the period. Canada experienced the most rapid growth and became the country with the highest percentage of users by the end of the period, while Mexico consistently recorded the lowest figures.
In 1999, Internet use was relatively limited in all three countries. The USA had the highest proportion of users, followed closely by Canada, whereas Mexico lagged far behind. Over the next few years, both the USA and Canada saw sharp increases. By around 2003, Canada overtook the USA and continued to rise at a faster rate.
By 2009, approximately three quarters of Canadians were Internet users, compared with just under 70% in the USA. In contrast, growth in Mexico was more gradual throughout the period. Although Internet usage there increased steadily, it reached only about one third of the population by the end of the period.
