The line chart illustrates the percentage of people over the world who used five different services to communicate, including landline service, internet service, mobile broadband, cellular phone service, and fixed broadband.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the proportion of all surveyed services recorded. In addition, cellular phone service became the most favored communication in the later half of the period.
The share of cell phone service and internet service users started at about 7%,which are the second most popular services to communicate in 1998. In the next 4 years the percentage of cellular phone service users experienced a remarkable increase to 20%, before reaching a peak of 60% at the end of the time recorded. Similar changes but to a lesser extent, the figures for internet service stabilized at under 10% from 1998 to 2002, followed by a mild increase to over 20% in 2008.
Most people in the world used landline service to communicate approximately 16% from 1998 to 2000, after which it stabilized at around 15% between 2000 and 2008. Meanwhile, the percentage of people used mobile and fixed broadband had almost no change which stabled at less than 10% throughout the period.
