The given diagram provides information about birth rate among different age category in UK between 1973 and 2008, measured at five-year intervals.
Overall, it is evident that the fertility rate varied considerably across different age groups, beginning with youngest and extending to the oldest. The birth rate was highest among women aged 25-29, whereas mothers aged 40 and over accounted the lowest figures.
To begin with, in the youngest categories under 20, 20-25 and 25-29, the rates for women aged under 20 and 20-25 declined gradually and ended at relatively low levels. By contrast, births of mothers 25-29 reached its peak in 1973, and in spite of fluctuations, it ranked first throughout the period.
In comparison, older age groups 35-39 and 40 and over displayed different trends. The birth rate women aged 30-35 increased significantly and then remained stable at around 80 per 1000 women. Meanwhile, the figure for those aged 35-39 stayed constant at roughly 50 in 1988, before rising sharply to its peak. Finally, the fertility rate for women over 40 showed a progressively decline.
