The lines graph illustrates the proportion of households participating in recycling in the UK, France, and Germany between 2005 and 2015. Overall, while the UK and Germany experienced steady increases in recycling rates, France underwent a substantial decline, followed by a moderate recovery recovery towards the end of the period.
In 2005, France recorded the highest recycling rate at approximately 50%, whereas Germany had the lowest, at around 20%. The UK stood between, with about 35%. From 2005 to 2007, the UK’s recycling rate increased modestly to around 40% and then remained relatively stable until 2009. During the same period Germany exhibited a consistent upward trend, reaching nearly 40% and surpassing France by 2009. In contrast, France experienced a continuous decline, dropping from 50% to just over 30% within these years.
From 2010 onwards, both the UK and Germany continued to see marked increases in recycling rates. By 2015, the UK had slightly exceeded 60%, marginally higher than Germany. Meanwhile, France’s rate fell to a low of approximatelly 30% in 2013, before recovering moderately to almost 40% by the end of the period. These trends highlight a widening gap initially between France and the other two countries, which gradually narrowed towards 2015.
