The line graph illustrates the proportion of African residents with a subscription to mobile and fixed line phones between 1994 and 2004.
Overall, the amount of subscribers for both phone lines increased. The figures for fixed line phones showed a steady growth, while the percentage of people subscribing mobile line phones increased dramatically by the end of the period.
In terms of fixed line phones,starting at 1.7% by 1996 the percentage increased to 2% , the percentage remained approximately the same untill 1999 when it reached almost 2,5%. The percentage was increasing slightly reaching 3.1% by the end of the timeframe.
In contrast, despite initially having percentage at 0.06% the figures of people subscribing mobile line phones reached 8.8% by 2004. During meantime, the share of people was remaining stable untill 1999 when the amount of mobile line phones subscribers reached 1%. In 2000 the percentage doubled. Between 2001 and 2003 the numbers increased dramtically, starting at 3% and reaching 6%.
