The line graph illustrates the percentage of telephone subscribers per 100 residents in Africa between 1994 and 2004.
Overall, both mobile and fixed-line subscriptions increased over the period. However, while fixed-line subscribers were more common at the beginning, mobile phone usage grew rapidly and eventually surpassed fixed-line subscriptions by the end of the period.
In terms of mobile phone users, the percentage was very low at the beginning, accounting for only 0.06% in 1994. This figure rose gradually to about 1% in 1999. After that, there was a dramatic increase from 2000 to 2004, when the proportion climbed sharply and reached a peak of approximately 8.8%.
Regarding fixed-line subscribers, the percentage started at around 1.7% in 1994, which was significantly higher than that of mobile phones. The figure then increased moderately to about 2.5% in 1999 and remained stable in 2000. From 2001 onwards, it experienced a slight rise and reached approximately 3.1% by 2004.
