The line chart depicts the distance travelled over time during a 100-kilometer race between a tortoise and a hare. The units are measured in kilometers and hours.
Overall, while the hare initially gained a substantial lead over the tortoise, it lost traction owing to a nap, and remained at a standstill for a lengthy period after completing more than half the race. Meanwhile, the tortoise, although slow, maintained a steady pace throughout the time before overtaking the hare and finally winning the race.
The first three hours of the race saw the hare gaining a tremendous lead over the tortoise: at the end of the first hour, the hare had already gained nearly a two-fold lead over the tortoise, at 20km and 11km respectively. This trend continued for the next two hours, with the hare nearly doubling the pace of the tortoise, and by the third hour of the race, the hare had surpassed the tortoise by a 27-kilometer margin, with figures of 60km and 33km respectively. However, between the third and fourth hours, the hare began slackening its speed, while the tortoise maintained its steady pace.
Although the hare was still leading by 26 kilometers at the fourth hour mark, at 70-kilometers completed, it came to an abrupt halt due to napping and covered no more distance for the next two hours. During that time, the tortoise continued its steady speed, and by the time the hare woke up at the 6th hour, the tortoise had nearly closed the lead, trailing the hare by only 4km, at 66 total kilometers run. By the 8th hour, and at 88 kilometers, the tortoise had finally closed the lead and began surpassing the hare before finally winning the race by the 9th hour, whereas the hare finally reached the finish line an hour later.
Overall, the hare initially had a sizeable lead over the tortoise but began slacking by the time it was more than halfway through the race. Owing to the hare taking a nap, it paused for a while and lost some of its lead. Toward the end of the race, the tortoise finally caught up with the hare and won.
