Overall, the number of people who attended football matches in England and Germany increased over the period, while Italy followed the opposite trend.
To begin with, in 1980, the attendance in Italy was 35 thousand, while in 1986 the figure reached its peak at 37 thousand. Despite the increase, in 1992 Italy experienced a dramatic decrease in attendance to 30 thousand. Then, there was a slight drop to 27 thousand in 1998, and in 2004 the number of people who attended top-level football matches in Italy reached its lowest point at 25 thousand.
By comparison, the number of attendance in England and Germany was around 25 thousand in 1980. There was a dramatic decrease to 20 thousand in Germany in 1986. However, the number of people in Germany saw a continuous increase year by year, and in 2004 it reached its peak at 33 thousand. Similarly, England experienced a slight drop to 23 thousand in 1986. After that, in 1998, it increased to 26 thousand, and there was a considerable rise to 34 thousand at the end of the period.
