Overall, the USA consistently recorded the highest number of visitors throughout the period, although its figures declined after peaking mid-decade, while Australia was the only country to show continuous growth. Japan’s trend was mixed, with a notable rise followed by a gradual downturn.
In 2010, the USA attracted around 16 million tourists, significantly more than Japan (10 million) and Australia (around 7 million). Over the next six years, tourism increased in all three destinations, with the USA reaching a peak of approximately 25 million visitors by 2016 – the highest point on the graph. During the same period, Japan experienced a sharp rise, climbing to around 24 million by 2017, while Australia’s figures more than doubled to roughly 12 million.
However, in the latter half of the decade, the USA and Japan saw declines in the visitor numbers, both finishing at around 18 million and 16 million respectively in 2020. In contrast, Australia’s tourist numbers continued to grow steadily, ending the period at about 15 million, albeit still below the other two countries.
